Alien Abduction

My last post about Area 51 and the belief that aliens have visited Earth started me thinking about the phenomenon of alien abduction. Throughout time there have been claims by ordinary people that they have been abducted by aliens and have undergone physical exams and questioning and then these people have been released. We are not talking about delusional paranoid individuals who make these claims, although some have done so. Primarily we are talking about teachers, housewives, a prison guard, restaurant owners, factory workers, etc. Everyday folks. When questioned by medical professionals, these people all relate very similar experiences such as a loss of time, an examination, and the effects of psychological trauma of the entire experience. There are even support groups for people who have undergone this experience. I have even known of a person who was not alone and experienced what appeared to them as a UFO that cut the power in their car and had an eerie light that shown over the car. If there had not been four in the car it is doubtful anyone would have believed the story.
Of course all of these stories have led to wonderful science fiction stories and series such as the X-Files, V, Unsolved Mysteries, and Paranormal State.
The thing about alien abduction is that it is out of control of the human being and in fiction creates terror that can keep a movie goer on the edge of their seat.
This leads me to my weekend movie pick called "Fire in the Sky." It was made in 1993 and based on the book "The Walton Experience" written by the man Travis Walton who says he was abducted by aliens and went missing for 5 days in 1975. The story is wonderfully told and focuses more on the psychological aspects of Walton and his experience. It is really worth watching.
