Mandawa/Rajasthan/India

This small, once prosperous town has many havelis - merchants' houses - decorated with lots of murals. Many are falling into decay and are homes to extended families. Enlarge the picture to see the paintings over the arches.

The women in Rajasthan wear wonderful bright clothing even for the most everyday occasions.

The town's main gate is topped with two cows supporting a god.
It was here I first tasted chai brewed in the street and visited a Hindu temple.

Raj, who was showing us round his home town, took us in to see the local elementary school where I fear we distracted the rather flurried school master - so we left quite soon though I would have loved to stay for a little longer.

This little prince looks rather spiffy and superior.
