The remake of the film
The Day the Earth Stood Still is out in the theaters today. Starring
Keanu Reeves and
Jennifer Connelly, this 2008 version of the original 1951 movie already has very mixed reviews. Those who have seen the original feel that the story was so well told then it would be impossible to remake it. Others feel that the 1951 story needed to be retold with modern film making techniques and with the goal of sending the message to a new generation of movie goers. The new movie, it is said, will actually be more true to the original
short story entitled "Farwell to the Master" by
Harry Bates. If this is so, then I do not have a problem with changes from the original movie because we interpret writings in different ways and create different visual images in our minds. I have not seen the movie yet so I may be totally disappointed with bad acting and a poor screenplay. I am, however, for the message of the short story being retold to a new generation who may grow to like
science fiction and listen to the moral of the story.
