Image via WikipediaShort stories are concise less complex vehicles for exciting and interesting ideas in science fiction. Short stories tend to focus on one incident and usually have 7,500 words or less according to the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Nebula Awards.
What is unique and fun about short stories is that the point of the story is made relatively quickly and there are fewer numbers of characters.
I love short stories and some of my favorite and most memorable stories have been in this form. For example,
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes was first written as a short story in 1958, was later an expanded novel and eventually a film. The short story was controversial and remains so today because of how mentally disabled are treated in society. Some groups have even tried to get the publications removed from schools and libraries. You know you have cut to the bone when your story threatens groups to the point of protest.
Another writer I adore is Arthur C. Clarke and in my personal opinion his short stories are by far more interesting than his novels. I love Breaking Strain written in 1949 and the situation two men face when they realize they do not have enough oxygen to survive and how to decide who will remain alive.
Short stories are just as vivid as novels and sometimes when well written more memorable. I found a fun site that lists some classic and some modern short stories in science fiction. While not complete, it still gives a good start into the realm of science fiction shorts.
