Yesterday me and the parentals were at the dining table having lunch. Then dad started laughing out loud. I turned to look at him and asked why. He said it was because I looked normal. Yes...once upon a time, I was a bit...say, chubby.
I was 56 kgs before I left for New Zealand in 2005, I came back at the end of 2005 for summer holidays and weighed in at 65 kgs.
65 kgs in 10 months! The first time I visited my grandparents during that holiday was the night I arrived at the Penang airport itself, however on my next visit there, I was in for a rude awakening...
My granddad let out an expressive sentence of "Wah! Since when did you get so fat!" (in typical Manglish [Malaysian English] ) when he greeted me at the door. I was less than thrilled. It was an expression I wished he kept to himself.
As you can see, four years after and I am still traumatised. Of course then, I replied exasperatedly, "You've only just seen me a few days ago, what do you mean by 'since when I got so fat' ?!". He brushed it off by giving some excuse that he couldn't really see me too well the other night. Ah, the old man was 74 years old then. I forgave him.
I was pretty sure it was all that hall food I was eating during my first year in New Zealand. The hotdogs and "fush n' chups" (as they say it) and all that desert!
Ah~Goodie Goodie Gumdrops and Hokie Pokie ice creams...I thought then that I was surely blessed.
Rats.
It is amazing how much more I can eat in Malaysia and still lose weight. I credit my mum for her healthy cooking (and the road-side food that keeps my diet somewhat balanced). I am starting to think it was my lack of seafood in New Zealand. Maybe I lacked iodine and my tyroid glands screwed up. You think?
If you are wondering, I am now a healthy 55 kgs for a 172 cm monster-of-an-eater
and I might just still be growing!
We get so hopeful sometimes it sounds a bit silly, doesn't it?
