Morning, Evening and Night

On the whole, I'm interested in flowers and gardens and poems and cups of tea -- oh dear. A severe shortage of muscle cars and weapon of mass destruction in this blog.

However, Henry takes a great interest in people doing things -- particularly if the things include large machines. So good to see the world through new eyes.

Herewith, a very large mechanical digger about to dig up the gas line.  The chances of being blown up are slight in general, and, in the event, would put my money on Con Ed over terrorists.

Here are lots of men with hardhats and yellow vests and orange cones who are allowed to paint on the street and dig holes in it! Cool possibilities.

Lo and behold! A Mack truck passes by -- a carting truck no less. What more could we wish for?

At this time of year the evening sun's reflects off the Starrett-Lehigh building

and the moon rises next to the Empire State Building.

A Hint of Pink: or the Dawnserly Light

*

In the late afternoon, the sun paints otherwise dull buildings nice pastel colors.

Very early this morning the sky was beautifully pink --- looking both to the West...

...and to the East.

The Forties

 8
It was not meant to snow much this morning, but it did.

It turned the ESB into a ghost.
I thought I had better go somewhere different for a change.

So I took a bus in the storm to the theater district (via 42nd Street)
to discover new and exciting worlds.

I discovered that there were very few people in Times Square.

And that there is an entire shop devoted to things M&M.

I discovered that there was a very cool dude (sort of lounge lizard)
lodged right next door to King Tut.

Unbelievably huge prize* to the first person who tells me who this is
seen here wearing an acrylic hat almost certainly not made in New York.
Robert thought EAP (Edgar Allen Poe)
but I said he was wearing a civil war uniform, so....

The irreverent part of me thinks this poster should read:
SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE RESPIRATOR.

So that was a foray outside my usual territiory.

*to be determined....
For a wonderful selection of modern bar stools go here

Frost Moon/Empire State Building

It's beginning to get colder....

Here is the frost moon starting its ascent over the Empire State Building....

 Higher......

.
...until it leaps out of sight

On a more prosaic note: we haven't actually had any frost yet, at least not that I've noticed.

Twilight

It was almost dark but the camera, which plays tricks, detected some blue in the sky still.
The lovely, elegant, iconic Empire State Building will probably shortly
be obscured by some very tall, not very interesting building.

Looking south from the roof. The Port Authority Building looks
a bit like a great big cruise ship anchored in Chelsea.

Great excitement later in the evening. It looks as if the firetruck
is ablaze, but in fact, the flashes are just tricks of the camera.

Empire State Building, Billows and Balloons

Some good cloud watching lately.

Evening light turns the Empire State Building silver.
But what is this alien building rising alongside it? Hm....

Clouds billow next to the  evil crane.

And balloons pretend to be clouds.

Evening Light/ShadowShotSunday

For other cool ShadowShots go to Heyharriet.

The weather in New York this so called summer has been quite batty.
Here is an example. Friday evening about seven, all wet, billowy and thundery.

After the storm has cleared just after eight,
the setting sun cannons down 23rd Street.

At eight thirty, the sky over the Empire State Building
is all cotton ball puffy pink.
(None of the colors have been manipulated at all.)

Squares

For some reason things look more rectangular in the early
evening when the sun is setting and the light is falling on the
sides of buildings. What a lot of small windows there are.

Toy cars from above.
On 24th Street they go white, yellow, red, black.

Quite a lot of stripes.

This could almost be a castle. The bit on the top has a Norman look.

The building in the middle is almost finished.
The jury is out on this golden tower.

Wet Day

This is what it actually looks like from the bus on a wet day. Wednesday was so very wet my boots were soaked through.

The bus was rather cosy...

...but the poor mother in the statue in Union Square must have been feeling pretty chilly.

Also the apple which had been knocked off the apple cart and was sitting in a puddle.

In the evening the ESB was swathed in mist and the top kept coming and going.

Midtown/Shadowshot Sunday

Please go to Heyharriet

I always get a bit mopey the day people are leaving.
A brisk walk helps.
Fun to let others set the route. So we hiked up to 5th Avenue to look for stuff to put on Ugg boots.
Here on 7th Avenue the bright sun throws window shadows on buildings opposite.

Also on 7th Avenue, a curved window makes fun distortions.

A very tall building indeed. The Empire State Building from 5th Avenue. Lots of tourists waiting behind ropes in the cold.

Amidst the soullessness of concrete, a photographer awaits the arrival of a wedding party.

This last picture has nothing to do with anything except we went into a tourist gift shop to get something for A.'s nephew and Lady Liberty was dangling in the window. See Sponge Bob lower right. The real Lady Liberty always looks a bit fierce and masculine to me. This one has a cetain sweetness.

A Walk and Some Busy Bakers

A walk down 9th Avenue where a shop has a nice silvery display.

For some reason silver is more appropriate in the winter. Perhaps because it echoes candles so well?

A very handsome cat hangs out in the vet's office dreaming of turkey.

Macy's (on the left) was meant to come at the end of the post. I won't be going there today.
Too many people and too much exciting parade.
It opens at four on Friday morning for die-hard shoppers who will get amazing bargains...
I won't be there then either.

This character was waiting for his owner outside the English shop.
He was very noisy. We saw the dog show on TV today and thought all the dogs were too primped and groomed.
I think dogs prefer to be muddy.

Time for a snack outside Sarabeth's in the Chelsea Market.

Inside Sarabeth's the bakers were exceedingly busy. So many pies to bake........
