I have been watching Star Trek: Voyager lately and have been thinking about how short the television seasons are these days. It is amazing to me that each season of Voyager has 26 episodes more or less and lasted 7 seasons. Now we are lucky if a show has ten episodes and makes it past season two! It is a real treat to sit back and watch Voyager because of the amount of time put into the characters and their history, of course with more money the sets were great, the writing interesting, and unique costumes, and crew. One thing I have to add is that I love the character 7 of 9 and wish they had brought her onboard a lot sooner, maybe the second season, it could have worked the first season but we needed some time to get used to the Delta quadrant. I liked the interaction with the Borg keeping in mind that DS9 was on television at the same time as Voyager for several years and the TNG crew was off making movies, some of it with the Borg, and the writers needed to keep the Star Trek Universe more or less unified and the stories consistent, and I personally think they did a great job!
If you haven't watched Voyager in a while, it is fun to refresh your memory and spend some time in the Delta quadrant!
I was reading the article in TrekToday in which Goldberg talks about her role as Guinan in Star Trek: The Next Generation and in fact, that is the last character Gene Roddenberry ever wrote for the Star Trek series. I have heard her interviewed in the past about her strong desire to be part of TNG, but at the time, the producers did not take it seriously until she got on the phone and said she really was interested. From the article:
But those in charge of The Next Generation weren’t keen initially on having her at first. “When I got the opportunity, I asked to be part of it. But they were like ugh, they don’t wanna … The person I asked was LeVar Burton because he was doing it. I said, ‘Tell them I wanted to do it very much,’ and told them all the reasons. He said OK.”But it took a while before Goldberg got her chance. “A year went by and nothing happened. When I saw [Burton] next I said, ‘What happened?’ ‘They didn’t believe me.’ I said, ‘Give me the phone number,’ and I called them. We had a meeting with Gene Roddenberry who asked me the same question you just did (what drew her to Star Trek). I told them the same thing I told you. I never thought about it that way. So he wrote the last character that he wrote for me, and that’s how it happened.”
The episodes I like the most with the character Guinan are "Time´s Arrow" and Yesterday´s Enterprise and I have to say, Yesterday´s Enterprise has to be one of my favorite episodes of TNG.
Amongst the items delivered by the Discovery space shuttle to the International Space Station earlier today, was a patch with a Star Trek connection.The acronym for the NASA patch for the Window Observational Research Facility, a science equipment rack that will enable astronaut-tended and remote-controlled Earth-observation experiments, is the same as the name of Lt. Commander Worf, the Klingon seen on Star Trek: The Next Generationand Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
I love pets and grew up with quite a variety from dogs, to cats and rabbits, birds, chickens, etc. My favorite pets are cats and that got me thinking about Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation and his cat Spot. I liked very much that Data wanted to care for a living creature and thus learn to be more human, be responsible for feeding and caring for his cat, and write poetry and paint using his cat as the subject matter. I love this article in which Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe says that life was brought here to Earth by comets, a theory he jointly proposed called panspermia in which interstellar dust is partly organic in nature and in comets. This reminded me of an excellent episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation entitled "The Chase," where Captain Picard is contacted by his archeology professor who is collecting DNA samples. When the professor is killed, Picard is left to piece the puzzle together of the DNA samples and in the end discovers that Humans, Romulans, Klingons, and Cardassians all share some common DNA that was seeded throughout the galaxy by an elder race. It is a fascinating episode and in some way relates to the theory of panspermia the difference being an ancient race spread the seeds of life, so to speak.
I found a video that highlights inconsistencies between the television series and the various movies made after Star Trek: The Next Generation ended. I caution you, this is only for the die hard fans of Star Trek, and especially TNG, but it is fun and hilarious if you are into Star Trek and find amusing mistakes they make in writing. When you have written so many episodes of dialogue, have several movies, then add to the mix a wide variety of writers, it would be difficult to keep track of such mistakes, but it is all in good fun!
