Victorian Magnet Calendar Giveaway Winners!

Ah... today's the big day! The day I pull the names of three winners for last Treasure Box Wednesday's Victorian magnet calendar drawing.

I want to thank each and everyone for responding, and for sharing what it is you do to decorate for various holidays. It was a lot of fun getting to read how different people celebrate by decorating their homes-- and I hope it offered a whole new bunch of possibilities for you all, too, getting to see what other folks are up to, year-round!

Anyway, I won't hold you in suspense any longer. I took the name of each person who responded to me-- including you folks who emailed me directly-- and wrote it on a slip of paper which I folded equally and put in this hat...

Then, closing my eyes, I drew three names. And they are, in no particular order...
  • Lola LaFayette
  • Andrea
  • and Linda!

Congratulations, ladies! If you email me your addresses and full name at thriftshopromanticAT macDOTcom (replacing the AT with an @ an the DOT with a . ) I will get your calendars out to you.

Thanks so much, everyone, for playing along!

Treasure Box Wednesday: Time Flies Calendar Giveaway

My, my, time flies!

Okay, so that's the name of an Enya song. But it's also one of the reasons three of you good people can get a little bit of treasure for yourself on this Treasure Box Wednesday.

You see, I happened to have gotten entirely more cute Victorian Trading Company magnet calendars than I needed. And I figured, a couple of you folks should benefit from my mistake!

So here's how it's going to work. I'll put anyone who responds here (who is not a spammer, mind you-- spammers get no goodies) into a drawing for one of these three nifty calendars. Just post your response to the following question by midnight Pacific Time Saturday, January the 16th.

Then Sunday I'll put all of your names into a suitably vintage container and do the drawing.

And the question is:

  • What holidays or occasions during the year do you decorate for other than, possibly, Christmas? And what do you do for them?
I thought this might be a fun conversation to get going!

Or, if you'd rather, you can always check out Sunday's post on "The Little Things"...

I've greatly enjoyed reading your enthused responses to it-- I had suspected you were a group of people who appreciated the small joys of life, too. And know I know for sure!

The Case of the Nancy Drew Journal Giveaway Winners

It's a mystery no longer! Who are the two winners of the Nancy Drew journal giveaway? The evidence is in. Let's recap the investigation with dramatic flashbacks.

All entrants left a comment on the original Nancy Drew giveaway post here on The Thrift Shop Romantic, and there were some terrific stories about beloved books-- so I thank you all for sharing them with me.

Then, each of those names was written onto a small folded slip of paper, and put into a Pyrex gooseberry-patterned bowl. Because we did not have a hat handy and believe in improv.

To make sure no evil work was afoot, we had two independent observers to insure the drawing was above board...

They didn't duck out on their duties.

And then the winners were drawn...

Congratulations to Peggy and Caroline on your winning entries! Please email me at thriftshopromantic (at) mac dot com with an address you feel comfortable with sharing, so I can mail you your journals!

And me, I have some actual off-line places to be today, so I'm afraid this will be a quick post today. But never fear-- Wednesday promises a Treasure Box of thrifted goodies to show you. And Next Sunday's post? Well-- that will remain another mystery. For now.

Otherwise, I hope you see you this coming Wednesday! Thanks to everyone who participated this last week!

Investigate This: TSR's New Look, Plus Nancy Drew Journal Giveaway

Hmmm,
(peering through magnifying glass) something seems... different.... somehow!

Well, I guess we don't need to do much detective work to see that The Thrift Shop Romantic has gotten a makeover. Designed by the talented DesignBug, the template was created to be cleaner, wider, and hopefully easier to navigate.

And now, in addition to the usual post archives, you can also access Favorite Posts, projects through the main Thriftshopromantic.com site, and Thrifty Places to Go, listing thrift stores, flea markets, antique shops and more in the Western Pennsylvania/Eastern Ohio region. I hope you'll check it out!

I'm pretty excited about it. So to celebrate this new look and new functionality, I thought I'd share the joy with a little giveaway.

I know a few of you expressed interest in the cute Nancy Drew writing journal I'd found at Half Price Books, so I bought two more to share with you...

How do you enter the giveaway? Just leave me a comment here on the following topic--

Have you kept any of your books from childhood? And if so, what's your particular favorite?

--and before next Sunday's post, I'll do a drawing and announce the winners. All comments will get entered-- there are no right or wrong answers here. I just thought it would be a nice discussion to get going.

You can only win one journal, but you'll get two chances.

In the meantime, I'll be updating the www.thriftshopromantic.com site with the new header, as well. It may take a little time, but soon, it will all be smooth and cohesive!

And for my readers celebrating Easter or Passover, I hope you have a joyous, peaceful holiday!

Treasure Box Wednesday: Greetings from Ireland, Horsing Around and More

This week brought cheerful tidings from Ireland, in the form of a giveaway package I was lucky enough to win through Pam of the White O'Morn Cottage blog. (Pop by Pam's for lovely cottage decorating and a terrific education on Irish culture and the Gaelge language.)

In it were some pretty handmade slippers, three fun handmade cards, a delicate Beleek dish filled with candies and a votive, a Celtic bookmark, and a shamrock-covered marmalade pot!

Thanks, Pam, for such a wonderful surprise!

A few other surprises occurred this week, but in the form of thrifting. In fact, in the Salvation Army, as I came around the corner and saw the next item on the shelf-- it made me say, "Whoa!"

Or rather, "Whooooooaaaaa!" This mantle clock is from the 50s, and is a perfect gift for my friend Scoobie who has some kitschy Western stuff. It needs some cleaning and some scratch polish.

Now here, you might think you're seeing a repeat-- but I found two more nesting bowls in my pink Pyrex set. Ah, perhaps pink Pyrex has proceeded to peter out of popularity, but I will pick and procure it perfectly pleased, no matter the pop-culture precedents. (And no, I will NOT say that five times fast.)

Lastly, totally void of alliteration, the Goodwill on Center Avenue came forth with a nifty aqua deco-styled platter (I have a big-daddy version of this already in my kitchen), and a Tim Burton chapbook of poems and stories.

And thus, this puts the reigns on this Treasure Box Wednesday...
Until our next canter, dear friends!...

Winners of the Nifty, Thrifty Gifty Giveaway

Ah, it's an exciting day here at The Thrift Shop Romantic! Why? Because today I get the pleasure of announcing the winners of the Nifty Thrifty Gifty Giveaway!

Gosh, I feel just like Bob Barker. (Except, you know, without all the sexual harassment lawsuits.)

First of all, I'd like to thank just everyone who played along! You all put quite a bit of thought into your responses, and I'm aware the game wasn't the easiest. I know prices and item availability vary across areas of the country.

But that said, you gals have "skillz"! (Well, as "skillz"-oriented as any of us inclined to use teacups and vintage tablerunners can be, anyway.) You really rose to the challenge, made some insightful, educated guesses. I found myself cheering you all on as the entry emails came in! I hope you had some fun, too.

And now, to reveal the winners and the correct answers to the puzzles.

For the first basket, entrants had to choose from six labeled items "Which Item was NOT $1 or less?"
This was of:

1.) Fairy candle holder
2.) Portrait plate
3.) Carnival glass tumbler
4.) Jadeite cup
5.) Red rose embossed lampshade
6.) Vintage pink glass bowl

The correct answer here was #6, the vintage pink glass bowl. I bought this bowl at the L&L Fleatique in Jeannette, and it cost $3. Which still is quite good, as these bowls aren't easy to find-- plus it matches some other pieces I have.

Quite a few of you chose the portrait plate which, believe it or not, was actually $1! I found that at a booth in the Riverfront Antique Mall in New Philadelphia, Ohio, and it was sitting haphazardly on the FLOOR in a stack with some other plates. I had to read the price several times before I realized the owner had actually-and-for-truly marked it as $1! As a decorative item, you just can't go wrong with that.

A few of you also suggested the red rose-embossed lampshade was more than $1-- but not only was it just one buck, it also has a matching buddy. I got them at the U.F.O. (Used Furniture Outlet) in Greensburg on one of their overflowing dollar shelves. For a gal who loves fixing up lamps, the shades were too tempting to pass up.

I had three entrants who correctly guessed that the vintage pink bowl was the sly intruder in my list of dollar items. So those three names went into the drawing for the Shabby Chic-styled gift basket-- as witnessed by one of my friends who witnessed the spectacle to ensure everything was on the level. (And yes, my friends DO think I’m nuts, but this was no better proof of it than anything else, really).

So the winner of the basket is a lady who goes by the name of “Mightycat”. Congratulations to you, O Cat of Keen Mental Power! Mightycat has already been notified of the good news and once we pin down the ol’ logistics, I’ll be shipping off her package.

Okay, are we ready to reveal the answers to puzzle number two? That was, "Which of these items came from a thrift store?" And I'd mentioned that there could be more than one.

This was a tough one. Here you had a choice of:

1.) Marble topped pedestal table
2.) Shabby chic style mirror
3.) Green vintage vase
4.) Vintage rose-printed vinyl dress box
5.) Antique dresser/jewelry box with still life
6.) Pair of chalkware bookends
7.) Vintage lampshade

The answer to this one was that everything came from a thrift store EXCEPT the green vintage vase. The vase came from an antiques mall which sadly no longer even exists anymore, out by Smicksburg, PA and near the Wingate Winery. I think I paid about $4 for it. But can you believe the marble-topped table, the antique dresser/jewlery box, the lampshade, the chalkware bookends, the mirror and the vinyl dress box ALL were thrifted finds in the last year or so?

I thought this was a fun idea simply because it goes to show the remarkable things it's possible to find in thrifts!

As I'd said, this was a really tough one, because as many of you thrift-savvy people rightly pointed out, virtually anything in the list could be a thrifted item. That said, we didn't have any one person who got all of the items correct. But we DID have three sharp-guessing ladies who guessed only one item incorrectly. So those entries went into the drawing.

I'm pleased to announce the winner of the second giveaway basket is “Belle-n-Lex”.

Congratulations to you, Belle, for your nifty thrifty detectivework! You have been contacted and will be receiving the second of our giveaway baskets! Woo-hoo, Belle!

And that about wraps up the first giveaway on The Thrift Shop Romantic.

Next week, in honor of the upcoming Halloween holiday, join me as we thrill and chill to some SCARY retro-recipes and some decorating HORRORS I’ve found recently in thrifted ephemera.

Until then, have a safe and happy week!
