My reflections on Star Trek and the hope for a new series

William Shatner as Captain James T.Image via WikipediaI was reading the latest Sci Fi news when I came across an interview the Bryan Fuller gave to MTV. Currently he is writing Pushing Dasies but he wrote for Star Trek:Voyager.
He wants to do a Star Trek that is in the spirit of the Original Series with all the action and the color. I find it interesting, though, that his favorite series was Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. DS9 has been considered the dark series of Star Trek and very different because it all took place on a Space Station instead of a starship that is exploring the universe. For me, my favorite series is DS9 because of the setting and being on the frontier of the alpha quadrant and the discovery of the wormhole.
In the interview, Fuller mentioned that Star Trek: Enterprise became too sterile. I agree with that and when I was watching the show the first thing I noticed was the lack of color. I know the show was a prequel, but even so, the color should have been there because Captain Kirk and the crew were in living color. This is probably to due the time period in the 1960's, when bright colors were very fashionable. Kirk was a very animated captain who wasn't afraid of a fight or the Prime Directive.
We had to wait until 1987 to see The Next Generation while Gene Roddenberry was still alive. He said that TNG was more of what he had originally planned as a Star Trek show. He loved the original series but felt too constrained under the Desilu Production Co.
In the late 80's to the 90's, times were becoming more rational in thinking (in my personal experience) and the show reflected that. Captain Picard was less inclined to fight and searched for rational ways to solve problems. If all else failed and self defense necessary, then of course we had our fire fights. (What is Star Trek without a phaser!)
DS9 and Voyager both overlap so the time and styles of thinking are similar.
Now I think Star Trek is at its best when it reflects in its stories the issues of the current times. Who can forget the famous inter-racial kiss between Kirk and Uhura?
When Enterprise was on the air, the times became very much in turmoil and the show really went along with this in their search for the Zindi. Only in season 4 did some nice things get explained like why the Klingons looked so different in TOS vs. TNG.
A Star Trek series today I would like to see today would have that spirit of adventure and hope along with issues that face us today such as peace, acceptance of all cultures, and of course the usual explorations and situations that make us reflect upon ourselves and see how we can become better humans.
I hope a new series will become a reality, in the mean time, I am waiting for the movie.
