Stargate Atlantis has been Cancelled

Season 4 cast from left to right: Dr. Rodney M...Image via Wikipedia The SciFi channel has cancelled the series Stargate Atlantis much to the dismay of the Stargate fans. Some fans are so upset they want to send a petition to The SciFi channel not to cancel the show after only five seasons. The fans feel there are still more stories that could be told. Stargate Sg-1 lasted 10 seasons and when it was announced that series would be shut down, again the fans were very upset and did not want the series to come to an end. The Stargate Universe including both SG-1 and Atlantis is very popular and has a very strong fan base that is absolutely loyal to the show. It has almost a cult following with websites dedicated only to Stargate.
The SciFI channel has said that it will launch a new series called Stargate Universe. I guess the SciFi channel realises that Stargate has a good following. My question is if Stargate Atlantis is so well followed, why not do two more seasons or more and then launch the new series?
Right now, there are some creative new sci fi shows out there, but it is nice to have the staples, such as the Stargate characters that we know continuing on the storyline created over the past four years of Atlantis. It has been planned to shoot a Stargate Atlantis two hour movie, but that is not the same as more seasons of the series. With creative writing, the show could produce some excellent episodes, but I think the tight financial times may have something to do with the cancellation but that is strictly my opinion. I hope they begin the new series soon but in the meantime I will enjoy the final episodes of Stargate Atlantis this year.
